HTC’s Vive, Oculuss’ Rift and a few more are the top brands in VR already. Deepoon, a Chinese VR maker says they will offer both: advanced technology and an affordable price VR headsets for all. Yes! It sounds like a big promise, but from the Chinese market, it’s possible given the price advantage of the mass in China and how Chinese firms are busy buying echnology research and trailing them at a new industrial speed.

“DeePoon can compare with international big players including Oculus Rift, HTC Vive and PlayStation VR in some technologies,” said founder and CEO of DeePoon Chen Zhaoyang.
The founding story of Deepoon come from several attempts tagged with his name such as robotics and gizmos. Chen hails from a background working for Intel China, a “technology-based” foreign company he had yearned to join. He received many awards and became an R&D manager within three years. Later, he finally decided to quit and start his own company.

He claims VR/AR as dream since post-graduate years. And wants the results of his effort to be more directly accessible to Chinese consumers. His early VR/AR attempts were mostly for military purposes. In China, most foreign company manufacture for the international market. Chen attempt to counter balance the trend by considering full products seems a smart move.

In 2013, VR technologies bane a trend with high potential applications beginning to be popular. As maturity of the technology continues with content and services,  costs are plummeting.  China’s opening and reform has laid foundation for the fast development of science and technology, as well as giving opportunities for ambitious individuals to become self-made. Founding Deepoon in hanghai in 2014, Chen is hoping to focus on the VR space as a platform to lead the market.

From headset to content the VR market is looking really lucrative. Global shipments of Oculus Rift will reach one million, shipments of HTC Vive will also reach one million, and Sony PlayStation VR shipments will reach 2.5 million, according to a report on the global VR industry written by Deutsche Bank in March.
Chen is pitching to deliver 800,000 units by the end of 2016, which would make the company’s revenue 10 times that of 2015. By 2017 he is expecting annual shipments to the tune of  2 million units, including 500,000 units of their standalone HMDs.

All these headsets mean nothing without rich VR content by the way. DeePoon in this regard is building up a content library, with over 120 games and hours of videos for its content distribution platforms—the mobile app 3D Bobo and the PC app DeePoon Zhushou. Chen said they are working with over 100 domestic and overseas gaming companies, including Tencent Interactive Entertainment, Unreal Engine and Unity Technologies, and many other Chinese video companies including iQIYI, PPTV and Dreamerkr. It’s looking up for the Chen’s VR ecosystem with about 6.5 million users registered on the 3D Bobo platform.
